FASTag is an RFID-based prepaid tag, fixed on your vehicle's windscreen, that pays toll automatically without a stop for cash at the plaza. Authorised banks issue it, it is valid for five years, and you can recharge it online. FASTag has been mandatory on national highways since February 2021.
When your vehicle passes through the toll plaza, the tag reader at the toll plaza will read the FASTag affixed to your vehicle's windscreen and deduct the toll amount automatically from your FASTag account. As stated before, you do not have to stop at the plaza for paying the toll amount.
You will receive an SMS alert on your registered mobile number for all the transactions that you do on your tag account.
FASTag uses the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology which, in turn, utilises radio frequency waves to transfer data. Inventory and assets can be tracked and identified automatically when items are tagged with RFID tags which in this case is the FASTag.
FASTag has been launched by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Electronic Toll Collection program.
With the use of FASTag, the magnitude of digital transactions in India will be augmented. It will also aid in the reduction of paper money handling. There will no longer be long queues and time wastage while waiting to make cash payments at the toll plazas.
Shorter waiting times and queues will, consequently, lead to the reduction of air pollution. FASTag will also help the government in easy identification of vehicles.
In India, FASTag has been made mandatory for all vehicles from February 2021 onwards. If there is no FASTag on your vehicle but you get into the FASTag lane, you will have to pay double the toll amount if you pay in cash, or 1.25 times the toll amount if you pay through UPI.
Perhaps, one of the greatest benefits that FASTag offers is that you do not have to wait long at the toll plazas to make your toll payments. The other benefits that FASTag offers have been listed below:
✓ Saves Time and Fuel: Since you do not have to make cash payments or wait in long queues at the toll plaza, a lot of time and fuel will be saved. Almost non-stop movement of vehicles results in lowered fuel costs.
✓ Ease of Recharging: Recharging your FASTag account is easy and can be done online through Netbanking, Debit Card/ Credit Card, and RTGS/NEFT.
✓ Get Notifications of Transactions: Each time you carry out a transaction using the FASTag, you will receive regular SMS alerts on your registered mobile number. You will also be notified when your FASTag account has a low balance.
✓ Environmental and Social Benefits: FASTag leads to reduced paper usage and air pollution thereby helping in environmental protection. The social benefits of FASTag are the reduced hassles in toll payments and better highway management through the use of analytics.
✓ FASTag Annual Pass: Owners of private non-commercial cars, jeeps and vans with a valid FASTag can buy an annual pass for Rs.3,075 for FY 2026-27, valid for one year or 200 toll plaza crossings, whichever comes first. The pass works at about 1,150 fee plazas on national highways and national expressways, is bought through the Rajmargyatra app or the NHAI website, and is activated on your existing FASTag within two hours of payment.
You need to submit the below-given documents for obtaining a FASTag:
Individuals can submit any of the following documents as ID and address proof:
Corporates will need to visit the website of the issuer agency or participating bank for the list of documents to be submitted for FASTag.
To get a FASTag, you will need to pay a joining fee and a refundable one-time deposit which will vary with the vehicle class. Once you get the FASTag, corresponding charges will apply while reloading the FASTag wallet. In instances where your FASTag is lost or damaged, re-issuance charges will apply on the second FASTag.
*Please note that according to your vehicle class, you will have to maintain a minimum threshold which is the minimum recharge amount that you must do during tag activation.

FASTag is a prepaid, RFID-based tag that pays highway tolls automatically, saving you time, fuel and cash handling. To apply you need the vehicle's Registration Certificate, KYC documents and a passport-size photo, and the fees and deposits differ by bank and vehicle class. Buy your FASTag from an authorised issuer, recharge it online and keep it fixed on your windscreen.
FASTag is a reloadable RFID-based tag fixed on a vehicle's windscreen that pays toll automatically from a prepaid account. When the vehicle passes a toll plaza, the tag reader scans the FASTag and deducts the toll without the vehicle stopping. You also receive an SMS alert for each FASTag transaction on your registered mobile number.
FASTag uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, which transfers data through radio frequency waves. The tag reader at the toll plaza identifies the FASTag automatically as the vehicle approaches.
FASTag was launched by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Electronic Toll Collection programme. The One Nation One Tag scheme of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways aims to give all vehicles a unified electronic toll system across India, so that one FASTag offers seamless mobility.
Yes, FASTag is mandatory for vehicles using the toll lanes on national highways. A vehicle without a valid FASTag in a FASTag lane pays a higher user fee than the normal toll.
A vehicle in a FASTag lane without a valid FASTag pays a higher user fee than the normal toll, and the multiple depends on how you pay and on the rules in force. The details are given in the section on why FASTag is important above.
FASTag saves time and fuel because vehicles move almost without stopping at toll plazas, and it removes the need to handle cash. It also gives SMS alerts for transactions and low balance, easy online recharge, and environmental benefits through reduced paper use and lower air pollution.
To apply for a FASTag you need the vehicle's Registration Certificate, the owner's KYC documents and a passport-size photo of the owner. Individuals can use a driving licence, passport, Aadhaar card, Voter ID or PAN card as ID and address proof, while corporates should check the issuer's website for their list.
No, each vehicle needs its own FASTag, and a vehicle can have only one active FASTag. If you own two vehicles, you must buy two separate FASTags.
No, FASTag is issued for four-wheelers and heavier vehicles and not for two-wheelers.
A FASTag involves a joining fee and a refundable one-time deposit, and both differ by issuing bank and vehicle class. The bank-wise charges are listed in the joining fee and charges section above, and the deposit is refunded when you close your FASTag account.
You can buy a FASTag online from the website of a bank or issuer agency by entering your personal and vehicle details, uploading your ID proof and vehicle RC, and making the payment. The FASTag is then delivered to your address, and you can also get one at a Point of Sale (POS) location at toll plazas.
You log in to your FASTag account on the issuer's portal using the user ID or wallet ID from the welcome mailer, along with your password. Individuals choose Retail Login and corporate users choose Corporate Login on the FASTag portal.
You recharge your FASTag by following the steps on the website of your FASTag issuer, using options such as Netbanking, debit or credit card, UPI or RTGS/NEFT. The recharge section above explains the process with an example.
You can check your FASTag balance and transaction details on the website of the issuing bank or agency. You also get an SMS alert on your registered mobile number for every FASTag toll transaction, so you can compare it with the toll charged.
Single trips and round trips can attract different toll charges, and any return-journey concession for a FASTag depends on the rules of that toll plaza. Check the charges applicable at the plaza before you travel.
If the electronic toll collection equipment is not working, report the issue to your FASTag issuer's customer care or to the national highway helpline. A vehicle with a valid, funded FASTag should not be charged extra because of equipment failure at the plaza.
You need to contact the customer care of the respective FASTag issuing agency and ask them to block your FASTag. The contact numbers of many issuers are listed in the bank table above.
Before selling a vehicle that has a FASTag, remove the FASTag and close its associated wallet. When you buy a pre-owned vehicle with a FASTag, remove the existing tag and get a new FASTag in your name.
To surrender your FASTag, contact the customer care of the issuer bank, which will guide you through the closure process and the return of the loaded amount. The refundable deposit is returned when the FASTag account is closed.
Yes, residents who live close to a toll plaza can claim a concession through their FASTag, subject to the rules of that plaza. You need to submit the required documents at a Point of Sale (POS) location to claim it.
